This pair of Victorian Chinoiserie vases dates from 1860 and takes a baluster form with a flared rim. The glass bodies display a pale green glaze finish, decorated externally with decalcomania motifs including Chinoiserie figures, floral branches, and birds. Each piece includes later tin liners and stands on a flat base. The visible manufacturing technique combines transfer printing with hand-coloured details applied to the glass. Measuring 26 cm high by 20 cm wide and 20 cm deep, these items suit placement on a sideboard top within an English country house interior. The pair provides a decorative focal point for living rooms, hallways, or dining spaces, functioning as standalone display objects on flat wooden surfaces.

Decalcomania is a decorative technique popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries that involves transferring printed paper cut-outs onto glass vessels, which are then painted and sealed to emulate Chinese porcelain.

These pieces are created using hand-blown clear glass vessels adorned with hand-coloured paper engravings, which are backed with oil or watercolour paint and sealed with protective varnish.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-blown glass characteristics such as subtle thickness variations or pontil marks, minor paint age-crazing, and distinct layered paper edges visible upon close inspection.

Placing a pair symmetrically on a dark mahogany sideboard, marble console, or mantelpiece provides structural balance and introduces intricate historical pattern into contemporary rooms.

Dust the exterior gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid solutions or immersion in water, as moisture can lift the delicate paper transfers and dissolve internal pigments.
