Six Victorian Champagne Flute Glasses C1850

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

An excellent set of six matching mid-19th century champagne flute glasses dating to c1850.

They have tall round funnel bowls with elegant flute cutting to the lower section. The cutting continues into finely cut shoulder knops, creating a pleasing transition to the plain stems below. They stand on conical feet with polished pontils.

Champagne flutes became increasingly fashionable during the mid-19th century as sparkling wines grew in popularity amongst the Victorian middle and upper classes. The elongated bowl was designed to preserve the wine's effervescence for longer than the traditional coupe, whilst the deep flute cutting catches and reflects the light, enhancing both the brilliance of the glass and the appearance of the wine.

A particularly attractive and practical matching set, equally suited to collectors of Victorian table glass or for continued use at the table today.

This set of six matching Victorian champagne flute glasses dates to c1850 during the period of Queen Victoria. Made from clear flint glass, the pieces exhibit tall round funnel bowls decorated with elegant flute cutting to the lower section, finely cut shoulder knops, plain stems, and conical feet with polished pontils. The items stand 17.1 cm in height, with a bowl diameter of 5 cm and a foot diameter of 6.8 cm. Champagne flutes of this Victorian era were designed with elongated bowls to preserve effervescence, while the deep cutting catches and reflects light. The set is suitable for collectors of Victorian table glass or for continued use at the table today on a sideboard top.

Victorian champagne flutes from the mid-19th century typically feature long conical bowls designed to preserve carbonation, accented with hand-cut vertical panels, petal fluting, and faceted knopped stems above a flat conical foot.

Glassware from this period was primarily manufactured using lead crystal or flint glass, which provided superior clarity, weight, and light refraction when cut by hand.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut panels with slight variations in symmetry, a ground or polished pontil mark on the base, and notable weight due to the lead content in the glass formula.

These tall glasses can be displayed on a dining room sideboard top, integrated into contemporary tablescapes, or arranged inside a glass-fronted cabinet to add historical texture to modern dining spaces.

Hand washing in lukewarm water with mild detergent is recommended to prevent thermal shock and clouding, avoiding modern dishwashers which can cause scratching or fractures.
