Exhibit Antiques has dated these Victorian Vaseline Wine Glasses to the Victorian era.
A superb matching set of six Victorian Vaseline wine glasses dating to c1880.
The decoration leads down to slice-cut stems, above conical feet with polished pontils.

A particularly high-quality set, almost certainly produced by one of the major Stourbridge glassmakers during the late 19th century, although which particular factory we cannot say with confidence. We have never encountered this exact cutting pattern before and, despite extensive research, could find only one other single example.

Historical Context
Vaseline glass takes its distinctive yellow-green colour from the addition of uranium compounds to the glass batch. Introduced commercially during the 19th century, uranium glass became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period, where its vivid colour worked especially well with deeply cut table glass.

The combination seen here is particularly effective...the oval printies and extensive diamond cutting break up and reflect the light, intensifying the characteristic luminous green appearance of the glass.
