Pair Georgian Nelson Whisky Glass Decanters C1820

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A superb pair of Georgian Nelson or cylinder glass whisky or spirit decanters dating to c1820.

They retain their original mushroom stoppers, deeply diamond cut with strawberry-cut faces. The necks have one plain applied ring and two diamond-cut rings, while the sloping shoulders are decorated with broad flute cutting.

The cylindrical bodies display an impressive range of early 19th century cutting techniques arranged in three distinct bands. The upper section has large raised diamonds with finely strawberry-cut centres. The central band consists of large circular disc cuts, while the lower section has alternating diagonal prism and cross-cut decoration with areas of fine thatch cutting. The bases are finished with deep radial cutting.

The sheer variety of cutting is particularly impressive. By the Regency period, English cut glass had developed into a highly skilled decorative art, with cutters combining deep geometric forms with increasingly intricate surface decoration. Decanters such as these provided an ideal canvas on which to demonstrate those skills with the different cuts refracting candlelight and giving the glass much of its brilliance at the dining table.

A stunning matching pair and an excellent demonstration of the glass cutter's art during the early 19th century.

This pair of Georgian Nelson whisky glass decanters dates to approximately 1820 from England during the period of King George III. Made from clear cut lead crystal, the pieces retain their original mushroom stoppers which are deeply diamond cut with strawberry-cut faces. The necks include one plain applied ring and two diamond-cut rings, while the sloping shoulders feature broad flute cutting. The cylindrical bodies display three distinct decorative bands of early 19th-century cutting techniques, comprising an upper section of large raised diamonds with strawberry-cut centres, a central band of circular disc cuts, and a lower section with diagonal prism, cross-cut, and thatch decoration. The bases show deep radial cutting, and one stopper possesses a chip on the underside of the mushroom. Measuring 20 cm in height including the stopper, with a diameter of 8.7 cm, these decanters stand on a sideboard top or dining table in a home today. They serve as functional spirit decanters for whisky or other beverages while refracting candlelight through their intricate glass cutting.

Georgian glass decanters produced around 1820 are heavy lead crystal vessels featuring hand-cut geometric patterns, ringed necks for improved grip, and individually fitted ground glass stoppers.

Artisans crafted these pieces using mouth-blown lead flint glass, which was subsequently cut on iron and stone wheels using water and abrasives before being polished to form refractive facets.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit a polished pontil mark on the base, slight asymmetrical variations in the hand-cut facets, subtle grey tints inherent to historic lead glass formulas, and appropriate surface wear on the base.

Position decanters on a sideboard top, drinks trolley, or open shelving within a dining room to catch natural light and introduce structured glass elements.

Wash decanters by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding dishwashers or rapid temperature changes. Allow the interior to dry completely before inserting stoppers to prevent interior clouding.
