This Art Deco opalescent glass vase stands 24.5 cm high. Created by René Lalique and introduced in 1924, the piece displays a flared rim, a wide circular top, and a tapering body with a rounded base. The translucent surface shows subtle blue staining and an opalescent sheen, decorated in high relief with four pairs of parakeets perched on branches amidst a dense background of stylized foliage and leaves. Additional birds wrap around the sides of the cylindrical body in repeated mouldings. Suitable for display on a sideboard top, this decorative vessel functions as a standalone ornamental object or a container for floral arrangements within a living room or hallway setting. The base carries an etched maker signature reading R LALIQUE FRANCE, while the structure maintains its original form without cracks, chips, or restoration.

Opalescent glass gained widespread popularity during the 1920s and 1930s Art Deco movement, championed by French designers like Rene Lalique. The technique involves adding specific minerals to the glass batch, producing a semi-translucent, light-refracting quality that shifts colour depending on the illumination.

Molten glass containing compounds such as bone ash or cryolite is hand-pressed or blown into cast-iron moulds. Differential cooling causes certain areas to crystallize and turn opaque, creating milky blue highlights along raised relief details while remaining clear in thinner sections.

Authentic period pieces feature crisp, deep moulding and typically bear an etched or moulded mark such as R. LALIQUE or R. LALIQUE FRANCE. Post-1945 productions usually omit the initial R. and feature distinct hand-engraved signatures.

Place the vase where it can capture ambient light, such as on a console table or window sill, to highlight its blue and fiery amber optical properties. Styling against dark background surfaces enhances the contrast of the frosted relief work.

Wash the glass by hand using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive soap. Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock, and dry gently with a soft microfibre cloth to prevent water spots.
