Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large seventeenth-century Italian walnut marriage chest displays a warm brown timber tone, a beeswax finish, and visible signs of age. The design includes a rectangular hinged lid above a recessed front panel, flanked by carved corner pilasters, all resting upon a moulded plinth base with a small keyhole escutcheon centred on the front rail. Measuring 55.5 cm high, 177.5 cm wide, and 63 cm deep, the proportions suit placement in a large entrance hall as a boot cupboard, positioned beneath a media wall, or placed at the foot of a bed in a bedroom setting. This substantial furnishing provides practical storage while bringing period character to a hallway, bedroom, or a gentleman's library interior.

FAQs

A cassone is a traditional Italian marriage chest given to a bride during the Renaissance and Baroque periods to store her dowry items. These large wooden trunks served both as functional storage and as prestigious symbols of status within historic households.

Seventeenth-century Italian chests were typically crafted from solid timbers such as walnut or poplar using mortise and tenon joinery. They feature hand-carved architectural mouldings, panelled fronts, and heavy iron hinges and lock mechanisms.

Authentic period chests show signs of hand craftsmanship, including hand-sawn wood marks, hand-forged iron hardware, and natural wear to the base and edges. The timber displays deep patination, shrinkage around panel joints, and historical woodworm marks consistent with age.

An antique cassone functions well at the foot of a bed, beneath a hallway mirror, or as a focal anchor in a living area. Combining its grand proportions with contemporary artwork or minimal lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Preserve historical timber by maintaining a stable humidity level away from direct heat sources and sunlight. Apply a clear, beeswax-based polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect its original patina without clogging carved details.
