Description

Technical Description

A very fine set of six early to mid-20th-century cut and engraved port or wine glasses, dating to c1925–1950 and attributed to John Walsh Walsh.

Each glass has an elegant pan-top bowl, beautifully decorated with finely engraved fruiting vines, grape clusters, leaves and delicate scrolling tendrils around the rim. Below, a substantial band of deep scale and diamond cutting extends around the midsection, creating a striking contrast between the delicate engraving and the brilliant cut decoration.

The bowls are supported by short baluster stems above conical feet with polished pontils.

Holding approximately 100ml each, these are particularly attractive glasses, combining traditional English glass-cutting and engraving techniques with the quality and elegance associated with John Walsh Walsh.

This set of six early to mid-20th-century lead crystal port or wine glasses dates to c1925–1950 and is attributed to John Walsh Walsh. Each piece has a clear pan-top bowl with wheel-engraved fruiting vines, grape clusters, leaves and scrolling tendrils, a band of deep scale and diamond cut facets around the midsection, a short baluster knopped stem and a conical foot with a polished pontil. The set is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Individual glasses measure 10.4 cm in height, with a bowl diameter of 6.6 cm and a foot diameter of 6.7 cm, and hold approximately 100 ml. These glasses suit formal dining settings, traditional sideboards or drinks cabinets, and function for serving port or wine at dinner parties and gatherings. The reflective cut facets and fine engraving catch the light during evening entertaining, while the sturdy footed bases provide stability on dining tables. The collection integrates well into English Country House interiors and brings historical table glass design into daily domestic use.

Pan top port glasses feature a bowl shape that flares outwards at the rim, designed during the 18th to mid-20th centuries to accentuate the aromas and visual clarity of fortified wines.

Vintage stemware from this period typically utilises clear lead crystal or glass, decorated through copper-wheel engraving for surface patterns and lapidary cutting for structural facets.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-engraved surface patterns such as grapevine motifs, cut facet details on the bowl base, polished pontil marks, and mid-20th-century stem proportions.

These items can be displayed on a dark wood sideboard, arranged within a glass-front cabinet, or styled alongside modern glass decanters on a brass service trolley.

Hand wash stemware individually in lukewarm water using mild liquid detergent, avoiding dishwashers to prevent thermal shock, clouding, or abrasion to the surface engraving.
