Georgian Bristol Blue Brandy Decanter and Stopper

19th century
Description

This is a Georgian, "Bristol" blue Indian club-shaped Brandy decanter dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use.

The decanter has a gilded everted pouring lip and is round in cross-section. The decanter is decorated with a gilt faux label for Brandy "suspended" from a gilt chain. The base carries a rough pontil mark and measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The decanter measures 19 cm (7.6 inches) in height without the stopper and 24.5 cm (9.8 inches) with the stopper inserted.

The stopper is of similar metal but is probably not the original. It has no gilded "B" on it as we would expect and is somewhat plain, with little ornamentation. It is a good fit, is of the right period and metal, and looks the part.

There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. The gilding is rubbed in places.

It weighs in at 340 g. (~ 12 oz.).

This Georgian Bristol blue Indian club-shaped Brandy decanter and matching lozenge stopper date from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830. Formed from cobalt blue glass, the piece displays a round cross-section, a tapered neck, a gilded everted pouring lip, and a rough pontil mark to the base. Surface ornamentation includes gilded lettering spelling "Brandy" enclosed within a label cartouche suspended from a gilt chain, with rubbing to the gilding in places. Age-related wear and tear appears at the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use, alongside a stopper featuring little ornamentation. It measures 24.5 cm high and 7 cm wide. In a home today, this decanter suits placement upon a sideboard top or within a gentleman's library. The item serves as a display vessel or functional serving piece for spirits. Its rich cobalt blue colour and gold leaf details bring traditional character to a dining room or study setting.

Bristol blue glass gained widespread popularity in England during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The rich cobalt blue colouration was achieved by adding oxide of cobalt to molten glass, resulting in decanters made specifically for serving spirits such as brandy, rum, or hollands.

These decanters were hand-blown from cobalt-infused lead glass and fitted with ground glass stoppers. The labels and decorative details were typically hand-gilded using gold leaf fixed onto the glass surface.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit a rough or smoothed pontil mark on the base from hand-blowing process, period-appropriate wear to the gilding, and a correctly ground stopper designed to fit the neck taper.

A blue glass decanter works effectively as a decorative accent on a wooden sideboard, drinks tray, or bar trolley, where light can pass through the vibrant cobalt glass.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild wash liquid, avoiding prolonged soaking or abrasive cloths over the delicate gilded lettering.
