Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This clear Georgian novelty biscuit barrel takes the form of a melon, crafted from lead crystal with an ovoid body. The piece features extensive strawberry diamond cutting across the surface, complemented by vertical cut panels and a scalloped leaf rim. The matching lid has similar diamond cutting and terminates in a curved glass stem handle. There are no chips or cracks to the glass, and the lid fits securely onto the base. The barrel measures 23.5 cm high by 14 cm wide and 14 cm deep. It functions as both a decorative display item and a practical storage container for the home. Today, this piece sits well on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space, adding a touch of Regency style to an interior.

FAQs

Georgian novelty cut glass accessories originated in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain, where glassmakers created functional table items shaped as natural forms such as melons, pineapples, and squashes. These items reflected a fascination with botany and sophisticated lead crystal cutting techniques.

These containers were crafted using high-lead crystal glass, mouth-blown into foundational shapes and finished with hand-cut geometric patterns using iron and stone grinding wheels. The lids and finials were hand-formed while molten, often featuring stylized stems or fruit stalks.

Authentic Georgian lead crystal exhibits notable weight, a warm resonance when tapped, and slight hand-cutting irregularities across the facets. Key indicators include a polished or partially smoothed pontil mark on the base and minor wear scratches consistent with historical handling.

Place the piece on a dining sideboard, bar cart, or console table where natural light can catch the faceted glass. Combining glass tableware with solid wood or dark metal surfaces highlights the clarity and geometric cutting of the object.

Wash hand-cut lead crystal by hand using lukewarm water and a mild liquid detergent, avoiding dishwashers which cause clouding and thermal shock. Dry immediately with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth to prevent water spotting and preserve clarity.
