This Edwardian solid silver gilt baptism or serving spoon originates from Denmark in 1901. The warm gold object has a circular bowl featuring intricate engraved scrollwork and geometric patterns, a twisted stem, a rectangular moulded collar section near the bowl, and a spherical finial at the terminal end with a small protruding pin. Hallmarks include the three towers silver mark and the date code 01. Measuring 28 cm long by 7.8 cm wide and weighing 104 grams, the spoon is free from dings, splits, holes, and repairs. In a contemporary home, this piece suits display on a sideboard top or within a dining room cabinet as part of a collection of antique silver tableware.

FAQs

Silver gilt baptism spoons were traditionally gifted during christening ceremonies across Northern Europe to symbolise good fortune and prosperity. The gold layer protected the underlying silver from oxidisation while providing a decorative surface finish.

These items were typically forged from solid silver, stamped with regional hallmarks, and finished with electroplating or gilding. Craftspeople incorporated hand engraving, twisted stem detailing, and cast finials to increase rigidity and ornament.

Authentic Danish silver features official hallmarks, such as town marks or purity indicators, alongside maker initials and year marks. Verifying silver hallmarks beneath the gilded layer confirms the piece is solid silver rather than a base metal alloy.

An antique spoon can be showcased inside a shadow box frame, rested on a decorative tray, or displayed under a glass cloche on a sideboard. It also functions as a ceremonial serving utensil for formal dining settings.

Gilded silver requires careful hand washing in warm, mild soapy water using a non-abrasive cloth. Harsh silver polishes and chemical dip cleaners must be avoided, as abrasive compounds strip the thin gold surface layer.
