Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Victorian sterling silver tea caddy stands as an exquisite example of late-nineteenth-century English metalwork. The cylindrical body exhibits a polished silver finish, completely enveloped in intricate chased floral repousse and scrollwork motifs that frame a central blank cartouche. A heavily chased border runs along the upper shoulder, while a matching fitted cylindrical cap lid sits snugly atop the vessel. Hallmarks, including the maker's mark HA, are clearly stamped upon the side of the lid. Measuring approximately 7.8 cm tall, 6.3 cm across the base, and 4.7 cm wide, this compact antique weighs 56 grams and remains free from dings, splits, holes, and previous repairs. Placed upon a sideboard top in a dining room, living area, or study, it serves as a sophisticated display piece or a refined container for loose-leaf tea.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, tea drinking remained a central social ritual in British households. Silver tea caddies were produced to store loose leaf tea securely while serving as decorative status symbols on drawing room tea trays.

These containers were typically constructed from sterling silver (925 purity) using techniques such as hand-chasing, repousse embossing, and casting to create intricate floral, scroll, or architectural foliage patterns.

Authentic British sterling silver features a standardized set of stamped hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for silver purity, an assay office symbol (such as a crown for Sheffield or anchor for Birmingham), a specific date letter, and a makers mark.

A silver tea caddy can be styled on a dining room sideboard, inside a glazed display cabinet, or alongside contemporary barware on a drinks trolley to provide historical contrast.

Clean the surface periodically using a specialized silver polishing cloth or a mild silver foam to remove tarnish without stripping the natural patina from chased details. Store in a low-humidity environment away from direct sulfur sources to slow oxidisation.
