Arts and Crafts Satinwood Open Bookcase

19th century
Description

A good quality Arts and Crafts style open bookcase dating from the late 19th Century. It is made from satinwood with a lovely colour and patina. It has attractive shaped sides with pierced floral and geometric designs. It was likely made as a set of hanging shelves and has been put on bracket feet later but the base is very well made with dovetail joints and a shaped apron mirroring the shape of the top border.

It is in good condition for its age and is strong and sturdy. There are some minor signs of age and use, a few marks and knocks but nothing detrimental and no major damages. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Nationwide delivery available through our network of reliable couriers. Please get in touch for an accurate quote to your location.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:

Pierced tulip and geometric cutouts: stylised late Victorian Arts and Crafts design.
Slotted screws securing the rear spine: nineteenth-century screw fastenings.
Darkened ink marks on the lower shelf: domestic use over time.
Wavy figure across the shelf surfaces: characteristic grain of solid satinwood.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Arts and Crafts open bookcase dates from 1890 and is constructed from warm brown satinwood with a polished finish. The design incorporates four tiered shelves, a scalloped top gallery with pierced floral and geometric cut-outs, shaped side supports, and bracket feet beneath a shaped lower apron joined with visible dovetail construction. Minor surface marks and knocks reflect the age of the timber. The piece measures 122 cm high, 96 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this open shelving unit provides storage and display space for books, ornaments, or collections in a living room, study, or hallway.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against industrial mass production, emphasizing handmade quality, exposed joinery, and functional forms. Bookcases from this era typically feature simple silhouettes, visible grain patterns, decorative cut-outs, and sturdy timber construction.

Furniture makers favored native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, ash, and satinwood. Construction techniques prioritized traditional joinery, including dovetail joints, mortise and tenon connections, and exposed pegs, often finished with clear wax to showcase the natural wood figure.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand craftwork, such as hand-cut joinery, subtle structural asymmetry, and stylised cut-outs like stylized tulips or hearts. The finishes generally show a deep patina without heavy synthetic varnishes.

An open bookcase works effectively as a display unit for curated hardback books, studio ceramics, and structured greenery. Placing it against neutral or dark backdrop walls highlights the silhouette and timber grain.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Protect the surface from moisture and direct heat, applying high-grade clear beeswax periodically to maintain the timber finish and prevent drying.
