C. 1820. Very Large, Pine, Wonderfully Patinated, Green, Chest (Dutch)

19th century
Description

Circa. 1820. Very Large, Pine, Green Painted, Dowry Chest (Dutch).

This chest would suit a large entranceway. It's at just the right height to sit on, take off your boots, and store them inside. Equally, it would make a great television/media stand, with room for a lamp and a pile of your favourite books.

A dowry chest, also called a hope chest, is a piece of furniture once commonly used by unmarried young women to collect items, such as clothing and household linen, in anticipation of married life.

CONDITION:

Absolutely stunning patina overall. Good structural condition. Signs of historic woodworm (treated).

PROVENANCE:

Purchased from a distinguished, elderly gentleman who lived in a third floor, opulently decorated, apartment in the Oudeschans area of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It had previously belonged to his mother who had lived until she was 102 years old. To move this chest out of the apartment, it was craned out of the third floor window, onto a barge on the canal, before being lifted by four people into a waiting van on a bridge.

COLLECTION:

Buyer must collect, or arrange collection, from Westbury, Wiltshire.

This very large Dutch country dowry chest dates from around 1820 and is made from pine. The piece has a distressed green painted finish with visible wear, revealing warm ochre undertones beneath the surface, a hinged lid, simple mouldings along the edge, and bracket feet. Measuring 45 cm high by 274 cm wide, the trunk is sized to fit a spacious entranceway where it can serve as a bench for removing boots while offering interior storage space. Alternatively, the long surface functions as a media stand with room for lamps and books. Historically used by young women to collect household linen and clothing before marriage, the chest exhibits an aged patina and signs of historic woodworm that have been treated.

A Dutch painted pine coffer is a traditional wooden storage chest constructed with a hinged lid, historically used in rural North-West European households to store linens, bedding, and domestic textiles.

Chests from this era were typically built using solid pine boards joined with dovetail or pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, fitted with iron hardware, and finished with oil- or distemper-based paint to protect the wood.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related paint wear around high-touch areas like edges and locks, authentic iron fittings with historical oxidation, and signs of hand-planed joinery beneath.

An elongated painted storage chest functions effectively as a hallway bench, a foot-of-bed ottoman, or low-profile storage alongside a living room wall, introducing colour and historical texture to modern schemes.

Maintain historical paintwork by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture, and placing the timber item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
