This antique Turkmen wedding rug originates from the Teke tribes of Turkmenistan during the year 1880, representing the Central Asian Tribal style. Hand-knotted from wool, the piece displays a deep red ground populated by four vertical rows of eight octagonal Teke gul medallions, all framed by geometric repeating borders. The palette incorporates deep red, navy blue, and cream, complemented by woven fringe trim at both extremities alongside decorated elems or skirts. Tiny old repairs evidence the history of the object, which remains in very good overall condition. Measuring 102 cm high and 97 cm wide, the square rug suits placement in a gentleman's library or similar reception space to add warmth and cultural interest to a floor scheme. The compact dimensions allow positioning beneath small accent furniture or as a standalone wall hanging to display the intricate geometric weaving and tribal crest motifs clearly.

Turkmen Teke rugs are traditional hand-knotted textiles crafted by the nomadic Teke tribe of Central Asia, historically woven as part of bridal dowries and featuring distinct tribal emblems known as guls.

These rugs are constructed using hand-spun wool knotted onto a wool warp and weft, utilising fine asymmetrical knots that yield a dense pile dyed with natural plant and insect dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool variations, deep madder red tones, geometric repeated gul medallions, and structural irregularities characteristic of hand-loom weaving rather than machine production.

Position the rug as a grounding focal point beneath neutral furniture, pairing its deep red hues with dark wood, polished brass, or crisp linen upholstery to balance texture and tone.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, blot liquid spills immediately with clean water, use a quality rug pad to prevent friction, and consult a professional restorer for periodic washing.
