Small wool weavings from the Baluch tribal groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan, made for the weavers' own floors, prayers and pack animals rather than for sale.

They're the pile and flatwoven output of nomadic and semi-settled tribes of the Persian-Afghan borderlands, Khorassan, Sistan, Ferdows and western Afghanistan. Wool pile, with camel-coloured, blue, red or aubergine grounds. Everything was made for use at home, so the pieces that reached the West are nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Scale is the first thing to understand. Stated sizes cluster around 130 to 190cm by 80 to 110cm, and the largest dimensions in the archive stay under 2.2m long. 'Carpet' appears in 35 of 409 titles on Sellingantiques and 'main carpet' in 21, so room-size pieces are the exception rather than the offering.
Titles lean on design and function instead of makers, because no maker names exist for this material. 'Design' turns up in 133 titles, nearly a third, and 'prayer' in 89. The signature combination is a camel ground with a tree of life, and it appears at every level of the range. Named fields recur too: mina khani, herati, boteh, star in octagon, calyx lattice, willow leaf.
Alongside the rugs runs a parallel stream of bags and utility weavings, about a quarter of what's listed. Saddle bags and khorjin, balisht pillow-bags, salt bags, vanity bags, pushti faces. Then flatweaves: sofreh eating cloths, ru korssi, banded kilims woven in two parts. One-offs surface as well, among them a cradle, a tobacco bag and a camel trapping with tassels and beads.
Where Value Sits
Format does most of the work. Main carpets and runners sit at the top of the range and are scarce at it, while bag faces, pushtis and balisht faces sit at the bottom. Between them, the ordinary small pile rug carries the middle of the category.
Attribution is the second lever, and it's unusually granular for rugs. Timuri appears in 62 titles, Salar Khani in 18, Mahdad Khani in 16, with Bahluli, Yaqoub Khani, Ali Mirza'i, Djan Beghi and Sarakhs recurring in the samples. A named tribe or sub-tribe, or a regional tag such as Khorassan, Ferdows or western Afghanistan, sits above a plain 'Antique Baluch Rug'. The rarest origins recorded are Nushki in Chagai Province and Chakhansur in south-east Afghanistan.
After that it comes down to what dealers say about the weaving itself. 'Scarce' appears in 14 titles, usually attached to an unusual design or format, and 'weave' in another 14, alongside notes of fine weave, good wool and the occasional silk highlight. A familiar pattern competently woven stays where it is; a scarce field or a tighter weave moves up.

The dated field runs from 1850 to 1930, with 392 of 409 listings carrying a year. The 1900s are the largest single bucket at 140, followed by the 1880s at 92 and the 1920s at 59.
Those years are dealers' estimates rather than documented dates. Titles routinely say 'late 19th century', '4th quarter 19th century' or 'circa 1900'. One sample title claims a woven date in the hand panels, the only inscribed date in the evidence.
