Antique Baluch Tribal Rug, Khorasan Province, North-east Persia.

Description

This handsome Baluch rug has a beautiful terracotta ground with an overall small lozenge 'gul' pattern, highlighted in cochineal-dye, disappearing under the borders and out into infinity.

The main border has a relatively typical Baluch continuous vine leaf symbolising the eternal cycle of life.

In very good overall condition with slight signs of corrosive-brown due to iron mordanting, the rug is nicely-drawn and made circa 1880 in Khorasan province, north-eastern Persia.

It is often better to take a look at the close-up images to get a better idea of the ground colours and to see the cochineal-dye outlining.
