Antique Taimani Baluch 'Seh Mihrab' Prayer Rug, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 5in x 3ft 3in (135 x 99cm).

Antique Afghan Taimani Sistan Baluch 'Seh (Three) Mihrab' prayer rug.

Circa 1900.

This is a good example of a seh-mihrab (three mihrab) prayer rug by the Taimani Baluch, the rug is well drawn and has an 'earthy' soft colour palette, note the use of camel wool through out. The Taimani Baluch were semi nomadic in the Sistan Provence of Western Afghanistan, this design of prayer rug is unique to them.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear, and good pile. The rug has very soft wool with glossy pile; the browns are corroded in places. A very good example of this type of prayer rug, possibly older than most.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Stock Number: DS-0371.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Taimani Baluch prayer rugs are hand-knotted textiles woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in the border regions of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. They are traditionally recognised by dark, rich colour palettes, geometric motifs, and distinct prayer niche designs known as mihrabs.

These rugs are predominantly woven with hand-spun wool pile on a wool warp and weft. They feature dense, hand-knotted asymmetric construction with hand-bound selvages, resulting in a flexible handle and durable weave structure.

Authentic antique examples exhibit hand-dyed wool in subdued, natural dyes such as indigo, dark madder red, and natural camel wool. Inspecting the back reveals irregular hand-spun knots, traditional selvedge finishing, and subtle abrash colour variations throughout the field.

Due to their compact scale and graphic geometric patterns, these small rugs work effectively layered over larger neutral carpets, placed in entryways, or mounted on walls as textile art. They suit both minimalist schemes and traditional dark wood interiors.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary beater bar to protect the wool pile and selvedge edges. Rotate the rug periodically to ensure uniform exposure to light and traffic, and consult a specialist conservator for wash treatments.
