1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 7in x 2ft 9in (140 x 85cm).

Antique Afghan Sistan Baluch 'Seh (Three) Mihrab' prayer rug.

Circa 1900.

This is a good example of a seh-mihrab (three mihrab) prayer rug by the Taimani Baluch, the rug is well drawn and has wonderful soft colour palette. The Taimani Baluch were semi nomadic in the Sistan Provence of Western Afghanistan, this design of prayer rug is unique to them.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear, and good pile. The rug has very soft wool with long glossy pile; the olive browns are corroded giving a sculpted effect. A very good example of this type of prayer rug.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Maintain antique wool rugs by vacuuming regularly with suction only, avoiding rotating beater bars that can snag the fibres. Promptly spot clean spills with a damp cloth and mild solution, and employ professional hand-washing services for deeper conservation.

A tribal prayer rug can be styled as a focal accent on dark hardwood or polished concrete floors to introduce texture and historic pattern. Designers also position these smaller-scale rugs in entryways, study spaces, or hung on walls as decorative textile art.

Authentic antique Baluch rugs typically display a soft, lustrous wool pile, a dark palette dominated by terracotta, deep red, brown, and indigo, and complex geometric border structures. Architectural Mihrab or Seh Mihrab (three-niche) designs are key structural identifiers of prayer mats from this region.

Traditional Baluch rugs are crafted almost entirely from locally sourced, hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, warp, and weft. Goat hair or camel hair is occasionally used for the selvedges, with natural vegetal and mineral dyes providing the dark, saturated tones.

Baluch prayer rugs were historically woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the borderlands of southeastern Iran, southern Afghanistan, and western Pakistan. These textiles reflect the cultural traditions of tribal weaving, featuring geometric architecture and symbolic motifs associated with prayer.
