Size: 6ft 11in x 3ft 7in (210 x 110cm).

Antique Afghan prayer rug of traditional village mosque design by the Kizil Ayak Turkmen.

Circa 1900.

The rug is of unusual form with a double prayer niche design, each niche showing a mosque at the top with multiple minarets, and the inside of a mosque.

The rug is in excellent condition, with very slight even wear and good pile. The rug retains the original short kilim end finish. There are a few scattered old repairs.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use and is suitable for wall hanging.

Kizil Ayak rugs were created by Turkmen sub-tribes residing in northern Afghanistan and Central Asia. Prayer rugs from this tradition often feature architectural mihrab or mosque motifs designed to align towards Mecca during daily prayers.

These carpets are predominantly hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation. Dyes were historically derived from natural organic sources such as madder root, walnut husks, and indigo.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied knots visible on the underside, natural colour variations called abrash, and flexible wool foundations rather than stiff synthetic backings. Traditional geometric motifs and architectural double-niche compositions are also characteristic.

A terracotta or red tribal rug serves as a grounded anchor in neutral contemporary living rooms or traditional studies. They can also be displayed as wall hangings to protect the pile and highlight intricate architectural weaving patterns.
