Antique Salar Khani Baluch Rug with Herati Design, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 6ft 6in x 3ft 7in (197 x 108cm).

Antique Baluch rug, with traditional repeat herati design often found in Salar Khani weavings.

Circa 1900.

A very nice small Baluch rug, with a well drawn variation of the herati design in clear colours. This design variation and colour palate is found on a small group of rugs, saddle bags and saddle covers woven by the Salar Khani sub tribe of the Baluch.

The rug has good wool quality, with clear madder red on a dark indigo blue ground, note the highlights in yellow and ivory.

The rug is in good condition with even wear and good pile, the blacks are corroded as one would expect in old Baluch weavings. The side and end finishes show some signs of light wear.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Stock Number: D-0629.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Salar Khani Baluch rugs are hand-woven textiles produced by Balouch nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes near the Khorasan region of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. They are recognised for their dark, saturated colour palettes and intricate geometric repeating patterns.

These rugs are woven primarily using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation (warp and weft). Natural plant and mineral dyes are used to produce the dark reds, deep blues, terracotta shades, and rich browns.

Authentic antique pieces feature soft woollen foundations, dark palette tones, flat-woven kilim ends, and hand-wrapped webbed selvages. The reverse side demonstrates irregular hand-knotted weave structures and natural colour variations known as abrash.

A dark tribal rug provides visual weight and warmth when placed on light wooden floorboards or neutral stone floors. It anchors living rooms, hallways, or study areas, pairing equally well with period mahogany furniture or contemporary minimalist pieces.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the hand-knotted pile with a beater bar. Spot clean spills immediately with clean water, use a quality rug pad underneath to prevent slip and wear, and consult a specialist restorer for deep cleaning.
