Antique Arab Baluch Rug with Scarce Design, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 6ft 5in x 2ft 11in (196 x 90cm).

Antique Arab Baluch rug of scarce design from south east Persia.

Circa 1890.

This unusual rug has a design of serrated diamond medallions arranged in a way to form a diagonal lattice with a cross to the centre of each medallion. The colour palette of shades of madder red with tones of indigo blue give the rug a warm earthy feel. The border is most unusual with a repeat diamond and X design. The rug retains the original kilim end finishes at both ends with a chevron design.

The rug is in fair condition with wear and medium / low pile, there is some corrosion and scattered old re-weaves. The rug is of fine weave and has a soft floppy handle.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arab Baluch rugs are hand-woven tribal textiles produced by nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers along the border regions of eastern Persia and Afghanistan, known for dark colour palettes and rich geometric motifs.

Traditional Baluch rugs feature a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a natural wool or goat hair warp and weft, dyed using vegetable dyes derived from madder root, indigo, and walnut husks.

Authentic Baluch rugs are identified by their deep indigo, madder red, and brown palette, soft velvety wool pile, dark overcast selvedges, and repeating diamond or gul lattice pattern compositions.

An antique Baluch runner works exceptionally well in hallways, studies, or living areas, pairing dark graphic geometric patterns with rich mahogany furniture, dark leather, or muted contemporary colour schemes.

Maintain the rug by vacuuming gently using suction only without a rotating brush, placing a quality non-slip underlay beneath it, and consulting a specialist rug cleaner for periodic washing.
