Antique Tekke Turkmen Chuval Face with 6 Salor Guls, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 5ft 3in x 2ft 10in (159 x 87cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face with six 'Salor' turreted guls.

Circa 1890.

Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were usually woven in pairs.

A good chuval face that is very well drawn with six 'Salor' guls and Tekke chuval guls as secondary guls. The extensive use of cochineal dye gives the superb ground colour. The elem panel at the base is of a striking design that creates diagonal movement. At some time in its history the plain weave back has been removed, making this very suitable for use as a small rug.

Excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile.

Stock Number: D-1415.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval is a large woven storage bag traditionally made by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Tekke, for transporting goods and furnishing yurts.

Turkmen chuvals were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often incorporating natural vegetable dyes to produce deep red and terracotta tones.

Authentic 19th-century Turkmen weavings feature dense asymmetrical knots, natural dye variations, geometric gul motifs, and a fine, supple handle with wool selvages.

A Turkmen chuval face can be displayed as a framed wall tapestry, draped over a bench, or positioned as a floor accent in traditional and contemporary interiors.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush, address spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, and consult a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
