Size: 4ft 5in x 2ft 3in (135 x 69cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face with 30 small chuval guls.

Circa 1880 or earlier.

A good chuval face with six rows of five small chuval guls on a clear madder red ground. The chuval face is of very fine weave with a feeling of good age. The main border is a classic Turkmen design with superb colour. The elem is of the classic Tekke small flower or shrub design.

Good condition with slight even wear and good pile.

A chuval is a large, flat-backed storage bag traditionally woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia to hold bedding and domestic goods inside a yurt. The decorated front panel, or chuval face, features knotted wool pile displaying specific tribal motifs known as guls.

Turkmen textiles are traditionally crafted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation. The rich red, terracotta, and indigo shades were achieved using natural vegetable dyes derived from madder root, indigo plants, and oak galls.

Authentic 19th-century Turkmen pieces exhibit dense hand-knotting, soft lustrous wool, and subtle abrash shade variations from natural vegetable dyes. The reverse side reveals fine, tight weave structures and slight irregularities inherent to nomadic tribal looms.

A Turkmen chuval face can be mounted and framed as textual wall art or draped over a bench or sofa back to introduce texture and rich colour. It also functions well as an accent floor rug in low-traffic areas such as studies or bedrooms.
