Antique Quchan Kurd rug with Baluch Salar Khani style gul design.
Circa 1900.
This is a good example of a group of rugs woven by the Quchan Kurds of Eastern Persia. The rug design is very similar to that of the Salar Khani Baluch although the colour palette and weave is clearly Kordi. The weave is coarser with longer soft pile than you would find in Baluch weaving, giving the rug a very floppy handle. The two rows of guls stand out against the rich madder red ground. The border design is interesting being a linked bird head design.
The rug is in excellent condition with slight wear and good pile, note the original short kilims at both ends.
The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.
