Belouch Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

A soft and floppy tribal rug from the Belouch with its customary palette and glowing wool. I love these allover diagonal designs that slip under the border to give the impression of an infinite field. It has a classic belouch border and the white minor borders stand out markedly against the darker field. It is a quality rug that despite being a tribal piece is also very decorative. If you look at this closely at first you see an array of hexagons on a blue background and then the eye switches to see the blue background joined up as a lattice framing the small hexagons. These are clever and interesting designs not found on vintage and modern rugs.

Good condition with just a little loss to the ends.

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Belouch Tribal Rug to the 1920s.

This hand-knotted Persian tribal rug belongs to the 1920 period and measures 171 cm high by 107 cm wide. Composed of soft wool, the piece presents a dark red and navy colour palette with contrasting white minor borders. The field displays a repeating octagonal grid and gul pattern that slips under the geometric border, creating the optical effect of an infinite lattice on a blue background. Fringed ends complete the textile, showing a little loss that testifies to its age and authentic tribal origin. In a contemporary home, this decorative floor covering works well in a gentleman's library or study, adding warmth and texture underfoot. The flexible wool makes it easy to position on wooden or carpeted surfaces to anchor a seating arrangement or accent a hallway. Its intricate geometric motifs and traditional coloration fit seamlessly into classic or eclectic interior schemes seeking an authentic antique touch.

Belouch rugs are traditional nomadic textiles hand-woven by Baluch tribes along the border regions of eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Known for their utility and portability, these floor coverings incorporate geometric motifs, dark colour palettes, and heavy wool construction.

Tribal rugs are typically constructed using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation, though goat hair or cotton is occasionally used for selvages or fringe structures. Natural vegetable and mineral dyes historically provided the deep reds, blues, and dark tones characteristic of these pieces.

Authentic Belouch rugs can be identified by their supple feel, dense wool pile, dark palette dominated by madder reds and dark blues, and repeating octagonal or gul patterns. Additionally, they often feature flat-woven kilim ends beyond the knotted pile and overcast wool edges.

A geometric tribal rug serves as a grounding focal point when placed on light wood or stone flooring, contrasting well with neutral upholstered furniture. Layering the rug over larger natural fibre floor coverings, such as sisal or jute, creates texture and depth in minimalist or contemporary spaces.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush attachment prevents dust build-up within the fibres. Direct sunlight exposure should be limited to avoid dye fading, and professional cleaning by a specialist hand-knotted textile restorer is recommended for stain removal.
