Antique Western Afghan Baluch Carpet with 'Kalam Donneh' Design, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 13ft 1in x 7ft 5in (400 x 225cm).

Antique western Afghan Timuri or Baluch main carpet, with a warm colour palette

Circa 1900.

A good main carpet with classic repeat 'tree of life' design, this is known as 'kalam donneh' or 'pencil box' design in Afghanistan. The rug has excellent colour with warm shades of copper brown along with indigo blue and charcoal.

The carpet is in fair condition with slightly un-even wear and medium pile, there is corrosion to the charcoal browns as one would expect. The ends are slightly ragged and there is some wear to the side bindings. (The condition is reflected in the price).

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch carpets are traditional hand-knotted textiles woven by nomadic tribes in eastern Iran and western Afghanistan, recognised for their geometric patterns, deep earthy tones, and dense wool pile.

These carpets are constructed using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often incorporating natural vegetable dyes to produce deep terracotta, brown, and navy shades.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical hand-knotting, soft wool foundations, dark natural colour palettes, and traditional geometric motifs such as the kalam donneh or pen box pattern.

A tribal rug introduces rich texture and warm tones into a space, working effectively to anchor seating arrangements over modern hardwood, polished concrete, or neutral carpeting.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres, address spills immediately with cold water and clean towels, and utilize professional low-moisture rug cleaning methods periodically.
