This Regency mahogany secretaire bookcase cabinet dates from the period circa 1820-30 and combines a dark brown timber finish with glass and brass. The upper section contains two doors with Gothic astragal glazing bars enclosing four adjustable shelves with moulded front edges, alongside a brass central strip, original lock and working key. Below, the base displays a double bullnose edge moulding, housing a top secretaire drawer with replacement ivorine knob handles that reveals an interior of small drawers and pigeonholes. This drawer sits above three graduated cockbeaded drawers fitted with dark round knob handles, all supported on ring turned feet. The entire piece measures 224 cm high, 99.5 cm wide, and 56.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large cabinet serves as a functional display and storage piece in a principal reception room, study, or hallway, housing books, collections, and papers while offering a practical writing surface.

A Regency secretaire bookcase is an early 19th-century multifunctional furniture piece combining an upper glazed display cabinet or bookcase with a lower chest of drawers featuring a fold-out writing desk, known as a secretaire.

High-quality flame mahogany veneers, solid oak or pine drawer linings, handmade float glass panes, and solid brass locks and escutcheons were typical construction materials during this era.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, original astragal glazing with hand-blown glass showing subtle imperfections, hand-turned feet, and secret compartments or fitted pigeonholes within the pull-down writing drawer.

Position the piece against a contrasting wall to highlight the dark wood grain, and curate the upper display shelves with a blend of books, modern ceramics, or glassware to bridge historic and contemporary styles.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth, keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement, and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
