This George III mahogany and satinwood secretaire bookcase dates from around 1800. The rich brown timber displays satinwood crossbanding, an arched pediment with a small central panel and ebony inlay, and moulded cornices. The upper section contains two glazed cabinet doors with original brass dividers enclosing three adjustable shelves. The lower base section features a pull-down secretaire drawer with a green writing surface, pigeonholes, and small satinwood drawers, flanked by original brass handles. Below this sit two cupboard doors with satinwood crossbanding and a key, standing on turned feet. Practical for everyday use, this freestanding bookcase functions as a combination display cabinet and writing desk. It suits placement in a study, library, or living room to store books, display decorative objects, and provide a dedicated writing surface. The piece measures 50 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, and separates into parts for ease of transport.

A secretaire bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of furniture comprising an upper cabinet with shelves behind glazed or wooden doors and a lower section with a pull-out or drop-front writing surface above drawers or cupboard doors.

Late Georgian pieces frequently feature solid mahogany frames complemented by decorative satinwood crossbanding, brass hardware, hand-blown glass panes, and oak drawer linings.

Authentic pieces from around 1800 typically display hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-cut veneer layers, original lock mechanisms, period brass drop handles, and age-related wear on interior drawer runners.

Position the piece against a light neutral wall to highlight the dark timber tones, display modern ceramics alongside books behind the glass, and style the surrounding space with minimal contemporary upholstery.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the timber patina.
