Description

A rare and incredibly beautiful antique William IV burr walnut ottoman stool. This was made in England, it dates from the 1830-1850 period.

It is of outstanding quality and is a great size, the deep buttoned top lifts up to reveal inner storage space. There is gorgeous burr walnut trim around the lower edge, this stands on fabulous turned and fluted bun feet, with brass casters beneath.

We have had the walnut re-polished and this has been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is superb for its age, with some minor historical wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The William IV style spans the 1830s, bridging the Regency era and early Victorian periods, characterised by robust proportions, classical influences, and a revival of rich timbers like walnut and mahogany.

Authentic period pieces typically feature solid timber frames such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often veneered with highly figured burr walnut, and traditionally stuffed with natural fibres like horsehair.

Authentication involves examining timber grain, hand-cut dovetails or traditional joinery, patination, and secondary woods used in the interior construction, which should align with 19th-century workshop practices.

An antique ottoman serves as a versatile focal point, functioning as a coffee table substitute with a tray, extra seating, or a textured element to anchor contemporary minimalism.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity to prevent wood cracking, applying microcrystalline wax to polish surfaces, and protecting textiles from direct sunlight.
