The George II period in English silver, spanning from 1727 to 1760, is characterised by robust proportions, the heavy influence of the Rococo movement with asymmetrical scrollwork, and the frequent use of cast elements and chased decoration.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver, adhering to the British standard of 925 parts per thousand. Techniques involved hand-raising from flat sheet metal, casting components such as handles and feet, and applying intricate chasing and repousse ornamentation.

Authentic pieces bear clear British hallmarks, which typically include the makers mark, the lion passant indicating sterling standard, a leopards head for London assay, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of testing.

Antique silver adds reflective metallic texture and historical contrast to modern spaces. It can be displayed functionally on a dining table, grouped on a silver tray, or styled on open shelving to catch the ambient light.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish to maintain the patination and hallmarks. It should be stored in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment away from direct sunlight and humidity.
