18th Century George III Period Oak Court Cupboard, C1760

18th century
Description

Charming Mid 18th Century Georgian Welsh Oak Cwpwrdd Deuddarn (Two Part Cupboard), c.1760

A particularly attractive mid 18th century Welsh oak cwpwrdd deuddarn, or two part cupboard, combining great character, practical storage and beautiful original colour and patina. Of classic Georgian form, the upper section features a pair of panelled cupboard doors beneath a crisp moulded cornice, enhanced by lovely turned droppers that add elegance and visual interest. Below, the high waisted base offers two drawers over a further two door cupboard, providing generous and versatile storage.

Both upper and lower doors are fitted with raised and fielded panels, secured with simple traditional wooden turn catches. The drawers and doors retain their turned wooden knobs, in keeping with the understated country aesthetic. The sides are flat oak panels within a moulded frame, with pinned construction typical of mid 18th century provincial work.

The cupboard boasts an excellent, rich warm colour and a well developed patina, the result of over 250 years of careful use. Minor old wear, entirely commensurate with age, only adds to its charm. It has been gently cleaned and waxed in our workshops, preserving the original surfaces while enhancing the depth and lustre of the timber.

Retaining its authentic character and offering superb storage, this Georgian Welsh cwpwrdd deuddarn is not only a highly decorative piece, but also a fine testament to the enduring quality and beauty of 18th century craftsmanship, ideal for a country house kitchen, hallway, dining room or any interior seeking genuine period warmth and presence.

This 18th century George III oak court cupboard originates from Wales and dates to around 1760. Constructed from oak with a warm brown colour and a rich patina, the two-part design stands 187 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. The upper section displays a moulded cornice with turned pendants, above a pair of arched panel doors and simple wooden turn catches. The lower section incorporates two drawers fitted with small round wooden knobs, positioned above two fielded panel cabinet doors resting on short square legs. Minor old wear is visible across the timber surfaces. Practical for everyday use, this cupboard provides ample storage space for a home interior. It functions effectively in a country house kitchen, hallway, or dining room, offering both traditional display and enclosed organisation. The Georgian style integrates readily into period or rustic settings, adding historical character and functional shelving capacity to living spaces.

A George III oak court cupboard is an eighteenth-century British timber storage cabinet featuring a two-tiered structure, typically built with an overhanging upper section and a deeper lower cupboard base.

Pieces from this period were predominantly crafted from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery, handmade iron or brass hardware, and hand-planed panel inserts.

Authentic pieces display signs of age such as uneven hand-planed drawer bottoms, peg joinery, natural shrinkage gaps along timber joints, and hand-hammered iron or brass fittings.

An antique court cupboard functions as a focal storage piece in a dining room, hallway, or open-plan living space alongside neutral wall tones and contemporary natural textiles.

Preserve the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year while keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
