Originating from the Victorian period around 1890, this Scottish Napier clan silver plate on copper pedestal wine cooler or punch bowl measures 20 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. The piece exhibits a bright silver colour finish with rose-coloured highlights on the embossed floral and leaf relief decoration, a scalloped rim, lion mask capped drop ring handles, decorative fluting, and a raised circular pedestal base with similar fluted detailing. It also bears an engraved coat of arms featuring the Latin motto "Sans Tache" and the Napier clan crest. The item is in excellent condition with minor signs of use commensurate with age. Suitable for display in an English Country House setting, this wine cooler serves primarily as a decorative centrepiece or a functional vessel. It can be positioned on a sideboard top in a dining room, living room, or hallway to hold wine bottles or act as a punch bowl during gatherings, bringing a distinct period aesthetic to interior spaces.

FAQs

A silver plate wine cooler is a decorative metal vessel crafted during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold ice and chill bottled wine or champagne during formal dining.

These items were produced by fusing layers of silver onto a copper core, often featuring hand-chased relief details, cast drop-ring handles, and fluted pedestal bases.

Authentic pieces frequently show copper bleeding where surface wear has exposed the underlying copper core, along with period-appropriate markings, heavy weight, and hand-tooled chased motifs.

Position the cooler as a dining table centrepiece, display it on a sideboard, or repurpose it as a decorative planter or barware accent in a dining space.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish formulated for plated metal, avoiding abrasive cleansers that strip the remaining silver layer.
