The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late nineteenth century, emphasising art for arts sake with heavy influences from Japanese art, featuring asymmetrical nature motifs such as birds, reeds, and insects.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid sterling silver using techniques such as hand engraving, chasing, and sometimes gilding on the interior, often produced by notable silversmiths.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, a town mark such as the leopards head for London, and a date letter.

Such small decorative objects are ideal for display on a vanity tray, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled on a bookshelf alongside other curiosities to add a layer of historical detail.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, non-abrasive silver polish specifically formulated for antiques, avoiding excessive rubbing on engraved details.
