During the Victorian era, small portable scent bottles were fashionable accessories carried in reticules or displayed on vanity tables. Bristol blue glass gained immense popularity in Britain due to its deep cobalt shade produced using cobalt oxide, frequently fitted with hallmarked silver mounts.

Antique scent bottles were primarily constructed from hand-blown or cut lead crystal, cobalt glass, or opaque cased glass. Mountings and hinged caps were commonly forged from sterling silver, silver gilt, or nickel, often featuring hand-chased floral or scroll engravings.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically feature British silver hallmarks on the collar or cap, indicating the maker, purity, assay office, and year. Additionally, hand-cut facets on the glass and hand-chased motifs on the metalwork are indicative of period craftsmanship.

Place small glass scent bottles on mirrored vanity trays, bedside tables, or open bathroom shelving alongside contemporary glass jars to create a curated display. Grouping items of varying heights and deep jewel tones enhances visual interest.

Clean the glass exterior using a soft lint-free cloth lightly dampened with warm water, avoiding submersion to protect metal joins. Polish the silver cap gently using a microfibre silver cloth, avoiding abrasive creams that can strip fine detail or discolour glass residue.
