Description

This is a scarce set of four late Georgian, hand-blown, ruby glass double lip rinsers dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1820. Rinsers were used to rest the small wine glasses used at the time in water so that they were clean for the next wine to be served. The two lips are thought to allow a rinser to be shared between two people or to allow two different wine glasses to be rinsed at the same time.

The rinsers are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear to both the rims of the bowls and to the rims of the bases consistent with some 200 years of use.

The rinsers have bucket-shaped bowl measuring 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) in diameter at the rims. The bowls are plain save for polished out pontil marks to the bases. The rinsers are 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in height. There are a couple of inclusions in the metal of the bowls dating from manufacture which manifest themselves as bumps in the glass. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

They are made from English lead metal and weigh 335 g. (~ 12 oz.) each.

Glass rinsers, or glasscoolers, were utilised during formal Georgian dining to wash wine glasses between courses or when changing from white to red wine.

Georgian ruby glass was typically crafted using lead metal, with the rich red colour achieved by adding gold chloride to the glass batch during melting.

Authenticity is generally identified by a polished pontil mark on the base, heavy lead content, subtle irregularities in the handmade glass, and the specific double-lipped rim design characteristic of the period.

These pieces can be displayed on open shelving, used as small planters for succulents, or incorporated into a tablescape to introduce a pop of deep colour and historical texture.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock and cracking.
