Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique Chinese export camphor chest, dating from 1910, is constructed from honey-toned lacquered wood and measures 56 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. The light brown surface displays a soft, time-worn patina with visible wear on the stepped lid and front panels. Hand-painted coastal landscape scenes decorate the top and front, depicting islands, palm trees, and small sailboats, while the rounded corner posts showcase stylised dragons painted in red, green, and gold. A circular brass hasp lock plate sits centrally on the front, flanked by small cloud-shaped cutouts. Practical in design, the trunk incorporates an overhanging top and stands on solid upright corner extensions. In a contemporary home, this decorative box functions effectively as a blanket chest, coffee table, or general storage unit in a living room, hallway, or bedroom.

FAQs

A camphor chest is a traditional oriental storage trunk crafted from aromatic camphor wood. Historically used in Asian households and export trade, these trunks were designed to store linens, clothing, and documents safely, as the natural oils in the timber deter insects such as moths.

These trunks are primarily constructed from solid camphor timber, selected for its density and distinct scent. Decorative elements often incorporate mineral-based paints and lacquers applied directly to the wood, secured with cast or hand-hammered brass or iron fittings and latches.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-carved or hand-painted details showing subtle wear, traditional joinery techniques such as dovetail or mortise and tenon joints, and original brass hardware featuring natural patination and oxidisation.

A painted camphor trunk serves as a functional focal point when placed at the foot of a bed, utilised as a low coffee table in a living area, or positioned as hallway storage. Its graphic painted motifs add warmth and character to minimalist, eclectic, or contemporary spaces.

Clean painted surfaces gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without harsh liquid cleaners or abrasive chemical polishes. To preserve the painted finish and structural timber, position the trunk away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and strong heat sources.
