Description

An excellent antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany linen press by Maple and Co. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is outstanding, this is extremely well made and is a great size with lots of storage space. The upper panelled doors have absolutely stunning floral marquetry & inlays, inside there are three deep tray slide shelves. The lower drawers retain the original brass handles and also have lovely inlaid borders. This sits on bracket feet and has a removable cornice.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is very good for its age with a few small marks and indentations, commensurate for age. This has acquired a beautiful patina over the last 120-130 years.

The cornice comes off and the upper section also lifts off the base, so this comes in three pieces for ease of transport.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, spanning the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, was heavily influenced by eighteenth-century revival styles such as Sheraton, Chippendale, and Hepplewhite, combined with lighter, more graceful proportions suitable for middle-class homes.

Master cabinetmakers typically utilised solid mahogany or satinwood veneers over a secondary timber substrate, incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints in drawer construction and intricate marquetry or string inlay for decorative panels.

Authentic pieces often feature period-appropriate hardware such as brass swan-neck handles, hand-planed internal surfaces, makers stamps or paper labels, and traditional cabinet-making indicators like hand-cut joinery and subtle timber shrinkage.

A large antique wooden cabinet serves as a striking focal point in contemporary spaces when balanced with neutral wall colours, minimalist surrounding decor, and modern lighting, providing functional storage while adding historical texture.

Preserve antique mahogany by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading and veneer drying, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the polished wood surface.
