Description

DESCRIPTION

This is a substantial Georgian oak corner cupboard dating from the mid 18th century, c.1760. The upper section with inlaid moulded cornice above double fielded panel doors with Gothic arched mouldings, opening to reveal fitted shelves, and a row of three drawers; the lower section with two further panelled doors also opening to reveal a fitted shelf, raised on bracket feet.

DIMENSIONS

209cm high x 129cm wide x 60cm deep

CONDITION

There are marks, scratches and knocks commensurate with age and use. There are minor losses – for example to the inlay of the cornice on the left and side and edges of cupboard doors – and some small repairs. There is some localised historic woodworm, mainly to the lower section, but overall this does not affect the integrity of the piece. The hardware is replaced. The backboards are sound and shelves sturdy. There is a working key for each section. The cupboard is unusually large and very handsome, with good colour and patina.

The George II period spans from 1727 to 1760, characterised by a transition from heavy, architectural forms influenced by Palladianism towards lighter, more curved lines anticipating the Rococo movement.

Cabinet makers of this era predominantly utilised native British hardwoods such as oak and elm for structural integrity, often incorporating deal or pine for secondary framing and internal shelving.

Authentication relies on examining hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional pegged mortise and tenon construction, old timber shrinkage patterns, and period-correct iron or brass hardware fittings.

Position the piece within an unused room angle to maximise floor space, using the interior shelving to display collections of ceramics or books while letting the aged dark wood anchor the modern room scheme.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber splitting, applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish and protect the aged surface patina.
