An epergne is an ornamental centrepiece used on dining tables during the Victorian era, typically featuring a central vase surrounded by smaller detachable trumpets or baskets for holding fruit, flowers or sweets.

Traditional epergnes were crafted using hand-blown art glass such as cranberry, vaseline, or uranium glass, frequently mounted in silver-plated or brass framework stands.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base of individual glass inserts, hand-crimped rims, consistent wear patterns on the silver plating, and glass that reacts to ultraviolet light if it contains uranium.

An epergne functions as a striking dining table centrepiece or mantle display, often left empty to showcase the reflective glass properties or styled sparingly with single seasonal stems.

Clean the glass components gently using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives. Silver-plated stands should be polished sparingly with non-abrasive silver cream to preserve the underlying metal.
