A French carriage clock is a portable spring-driven timepiece developed in France during the 19th century, designed originally for travellers to take with them in carriages.

These clocks typically feature a fire-gilt or polished brass frame housing bevelled glass panels, with an enamel dial containing Roman numerals.

Authenticity is identified by examining the precision of the mechanical movement, hand-cut serial numbers, maker signatures on the backplate or dial, and the presence of genuine mercury or cylinder escapements.

Position the clock on a prominent surface such as a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table to serve as a sophisticated focal point that complements both traditional and contemporary decors.

Keep the clock out of direct sunlight and away from moisture, clean the brass gently with a soft dry cloth, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
