Description

A stunning pair of antique French inlaid marquetry marble top bedside chests. They were made in France and date from around the 1900-1920 period.

The quality is fantastic, they have an elegant yet sturdy design. The wood is predominantly king wood, with inlaid marquetry of various other woods. There are high quality ormolu mounts and handles, each has a loose serpentine fronted marble top with gorgeous colouring.

We have had these recently re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is excellent. One of the marble tops has had a small repair on one back corner, this is very well executed and barely noticeable, it doesn’t affect the strength or usability at all.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

French marquetry developed significantly during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly under Louis XIV and Louis XV, where master craftsmen used fine wood veneers like rosewood and kingwood to create intricate pictorial and geometric designs on furniture surfaces.

These pieces typically feature a carcase of oak or pine overlaid with veneered and inlaid exotic woods, often complemented by cast gilt-bronze or ormolu mounts and topped with shaped slabs of natural marble.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut wood veneers showing natural colour variations, traditional joinery methods such as dovetailing within the drawer construction, hand-chased bronze mounts, and appropriate signs of age and wear to the undersides and interiors.

Pairing ornate antique chests with minimalist contemporary decor creates a striking focal point, allowing the craftsmanship and natural marble tops to add texture and historical contrast to a neutral bedroom scheme.

Maintain inlaid and veneered furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out or warping, and dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth without applying modern silicone-based polishes.
