Coffers were among the most versatile and essential pieces of furniture in medieval and early modern households, primarily utilised for storing valuable textiles, documents, and personal belongings before the widespread use of wardrobes and chest of drawers.

Authentic period coffers are constructed from solid local timbers such as oak, featuring traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed panels, and wrought iron hardware rather than modern fixings.

Authentication involves examining the tool marks, timber shrinkage, hand-forged iron hinges and locks, and the natural oxidisation and patina accumulated on the wood surfaces over centuries of use.

An antique coffer serves as a functional anchor in modern spaces, often placed at the foot of a bed, beneath a window, or utilized as a coffee table to introduce warmth, texture, and historical contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels away from direct heat sources, applying occasional applications of traditional beeswax, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
