A pair of nineteenth-century French carved wooden pricket candlesticks brings classic French chateau style to a home interior. Each piece consists of a tall baluster turned shaft rising from a triform base supported by scroll feet, topped with a central metal spike. The construction combines carved wood and iron finished in aged silver leaf with a gun metal colour, revealing tarnished surfaces and surface wear from age. Measuring 70 cm high, 20 cm wide and 20 cm deep, these candlesticks work well on a sideboard top in a dining room, living area or hallway. The substantial height and sculptural profile suit traditional mantels, sideboards or console tables where they add height and decorative presence.

A pricket candlestick features a central vertical metal spike designed to hold a large candle securely in place by piercing its base. Historically common in ecclesiastical settings across Europe, prickets were designed to support tall pillar candles safely on church altars and shrines.

These decorative pieces were typically carved from timber and coated with a gesso layer before being finished with real silver leaf gilding. Iron or forged steel spikes were set into the top pan to support heavy wax candles, anchored by carved triform or tripodal bases.

Authentic 19th-century wooden prickets show natural signs of age, including craquelure, rubbing, or oxidisation to the silver leaf surface, along with original hand-carving marks. Inspect the spike for hand-forged characteristics and look for natural shrinkage cracks in the wood grain around turned sections.

Display a pair of tall pricket candlesticks symmetrically on a sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to add architectural height and sculptural interest. Their classical proportions and aged silver finish pair well with neutral colour palettes, exposed brick, or contrasting contemporary artwork.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster to avoid lifting delicate, flaking gilding. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent warping or gesso loss, and avoid liquid polishes or water on silver-leaf finishes.
