FAQs

The George III period, spanning from 1760 to 1820, is characterised by neoclassical influences, refined proportions, and the dominant use of high-quality mahogany. Master craftsmen such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton defined this era with sophisticated ornamentation, balanced symmetry, and superior joinery techniques.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often supplemented with secondary woods like pine or oak for interior framing. Traditional construction features hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, mortise and tenon frames, pegged joints, and solid brass hardware or turned wooden knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, such as hand-sawn board edges and uneven dovetails created before the widespread use of machinery. Look for natural ageing indicators including old wax polish build-up, shrinkage cracks in secondary woods, hand-forged iron or brass fixings, and a deep, oxidised patina developed over centuries.

Pairing eighteenth-century wooden furniture with modern minimalist decor creates a sophisticated transitional aesthetic. The warmth and rich grain of mahogany ground a neutral bedroom scheme, contrasting effectively against crisp linen bedding, contemporary ceramic lamps, and clean architectural lines.

Maintain mahogany furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading. Clean periodically with a soft, lint-free cloth and nourish the wood using traditional microcrystalline wax or high-quality beeswax, avoiding silicone-based commercial polishes.
