Description

This is a rare surviving piece that we found in an old chemist in Nottingham, England. It dates to the early 19th century and is complete with its original labels. It also has a wonderful patina to the paint which adds to its decorative charm. This multi drawer set would make a great addition to a home for storing all of life's clutter while looking good doing it. The handles are mostly original brass pulls but there are some replacements and where lacking there are old rope pulls. I have chose to leave these as is as they add to the character of the piece but we can look to source brass pulls if you prefer. Free stands perfectly well. All timber drawers as well.

This is 1 of 2 sets we have and is a large size with all drawers opening and closing well. The sizes makes this ideal for wall mounting of use on a table top.

FAQs

Georgian apothecary drawers originate from the 18th and early 19th centuries when chemists, druggists, and herbalists utilised multi-drawer cabinets to organise powders, roots, and dried ingredients for medicinal remedies.

These cabinets are traditionally constructed from dense native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and turned wooden knobs or brass ring pulls.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery like hand-cut dovetailing, historic timber shrinkage, original paper drug labels with early typography, and genuine surface patination developed through decades of commercial use.

This piece works effectively as a focal point in a study or hallway, contrasting against minimalist walls where its texture and historic character provide an anchor for contemporary spaces.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, applying microcrystalline wax occasionally to nourish the surface while preserving the original patina.
