A mule chest is a traditional wooden storage chest featuring a hinged top lid above one or more drawers at the base, evolving in seventeenth-century Britain as a transitional piece between standard coffers and chests of drawers.

Seventeenth-century chests were constructed using solid native oak with mortise and tenon joinery secured by wooden pegs, often featuring hand-carved decorative panels and iron hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-planed timber boards, irregular oak peg construction, genuine age-related shrinkage along panel joints, and original iron hinges or wire loop fastenings.

Position the chest in an entryway, hallway, or at the foot of a bed, pairing its rich dark timber tones with neutral wall colours, contemporary artwork, or woven linen textiles to create contrast.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp environments.
