Sweetmeat glasses were small, footed vessels used in the 17th and 18th centuries to serve sweetmeats, such as dry confections, nuts, comfits, and preserved fruits, typically during dessert courses.

These pieces were crafted from lead glass, known for its high refractive index and weight, utilizing techniques such as free-blowing into moulds, tool-forming for rims, and intricate air or opaque twist methods in the stems.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristics typical of hand-craftsmanship, including pontil marks on the base, minor surface irregularities or air bubbles within the lead metal, and characteristic wear consistent with age.

Historic glass objects add texture and historic contrast when displayed on open shelving, within glass-fronted cabinets, or utilized as sophisticated decorative accents on sideboards and mantelpieces.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and dried carefully with a lint-free cloth to protect the delicate surface.
