Nineteenth-century enamelled glass egg boxes, often associated with French and Bohemian glassmakers, gained popularity due to the influence of Faberge imperial eggs and a broader European fascination with novelty vanity items. These pieces were typically produced as decorative containers for holding small personal items such as rings, pins, or visiting cards on a dressing table.

These items were crafted using mouth-blown coloured glass, frequently mounted with cast brass or gilt metal hinged hardware. Decoration involved hand-painted vitreous enamel and gilded detailing, where finely ground coloured glass pigments were applied to the surface and fired at high temperatures to fuse permanently with the base glass.

Authentication involves examining the base glass for pontil marks, bubbles, and minor irregularities indicative of hand-blowing. The enamel should exhibit slight raised texture and natural wear consistent with age, while the metal mounts typically display period-appropriate construction methods such as pinned hinges and hand-cut threads rather than modern fasteners.

Such decorative objects serve as focal points on surfaces like mantelpieces, bedside tables, or open bookshelves, introducing colour and historical texture to contemporary spaces. They pair effectively with minimalist backdrops, allowing the reflective qualities of the glass and metallic mounts to stand out without visual clutter.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of hand-painted enamels and gilding. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth; chemical cleaners and immersion in water must be avoided to protect both the metallic mounts and the fragile enamel surface.
