Sold 12 June 2025 · Cross Antiques

Description

A lovely faded mahogany " Country House Condition" Longcase clock.

The case is solid mahogany and is very good quality but is now an attractive faded colour. It is generally in good condition but does have a small amount of cross banding missing from the back edge of the trunk.

The 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a smart, possibly associated, brass dial. To the arch is a dial that should indicate the phase of the moon but this is fixed in position but still looks most attractive.

The movement is in working order but is offered as a trade sale, as is and without any guarantee.

UK delivery arranged at cost.

Date of Manufacture

Cross Antiques has dated this Antique Mahogany Grandfather Clock to the 18th Century.

Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated following the introduction of the pendulum by Christiaan Huygens in 1656. The tall wooden case was originally designed to protect the long pendulum and heavy weights required by early clockwork mechanisms.

These clocks typically feature solid timber cases constructed from native or imported hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. The dials are generally made from brass with engraved or silvered chapter rings, often accented with cast brass spandrels.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery, and movement plates secured by tapered pins rather than modern screws. Maker signatures are frequently engraved directly onto the brass dial face.

An antique longcase clock serves as a striking architectural focal point when placed in an entryway or living room, grounding contemporary minimalist spaces with historical texture and traditional craftsmanship.

Maintenance involves keeping the clock in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and dramatic temperature fluctuations. Mechanical movements require professional servicing and oiling every three to five years to ensure accurate timekeeping.
