Description

A Pair of 18th Century Dutch Delft Polychrome Vases 16cm.

A stylish pair of late 18th century, circa 1780-1800, polychrome hand painted Dutch Delft baluster shape vases with a matching floral decorative theme.

The 16cm tall vases have an attractive decoration that is evidently hand painted, a rare polychrome or multi coloured theme, often the traditional blue and white, making these decorative pair of antique vases in mostly very good condition.

It’s quite typical for antique Delft porcelain of this period to show several chips and nibbles to the edges whilst these are in very good condition, with no cracks or significant chips, revealing evidence of kiln dust and no lids.

Dutch Delftware is a type of tin-glazed earthenware manufactured in the Netherlands, particularly in Delft, primarily from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It emerged as a European response to imported Chinese porcelain, eventually developing its own distinctive artistic identity.

These vessels were typically formed from local clays, fired into a buff earthenware biscuit, and then coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Artisans hand-painted the designs directly onto the unfired glaze using metallic oxides before a final transparent lead glaze was applied for firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor imperfections, hand-brushed brushstrokes, crazing within the glaze, and sometimes makers marks or guild ciphers on the base. The weight, glaze depth, and pigment saturation characteristic of period firing techniques also help differentiate genuine items from later reproductions.

Such historic ceramic pieces work well as focal display objects on open shelving, mantelpieces, or side tables, contrasting effectively against contemporary minimalist or traditional backdrops. Pairing them in symmetrical arrangements highlights their historical use as mantel garnitures.

Tin-glazed earthenware is porous and fragile, so pieces should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush; water washing should be avoided to prevent moisture ingress into crazed glaze areas.
